Chambers Haldane Cooke Macfall was an English military officer and author. Both parents had military ties, and he was educated at military school, and served in India and West Africa, retiring as a lieutenant. He became an influential art critic and historian, and a successful novelist of both historical fiction and adventure stories. He was also an artist and book designer. Robert Blatchford was an English author known primarily as an outspoken Socialist. Born in Maidstone, Kent, to two touring actors, he was apprenticed with a brushmaker, but ran away after six years, enlisting in the army soon thereafter. After leaving the army, he worked as a clerk before becoming a journalist, but lost his job after converting to Socialism.
